- Diverting waste from landfills by creating art
WHY IT MATTERS
- The world generates approximately 1.3 billion tons of garbage annually.
- By 2025 that number is expected to increase by 70%.
Portuguese street artist Artur Bordalo, aka Bordalo II, is taking on Portugal’s trash problem by transforming discarded materials into art, while adding color to the streets of Lisbon. Bordalo is known for his large-scale animal designs that are generally made up of plastic, construction materials, old appliances and car parts, which he collects himself. He uses animal subjects as a way to show the world all the wonderful creatures that fall victim to our waste. His latest solo exhibit, Attero, which is Latin for waste, features smaller-scale pieces mounted on old doors, windowpanes and siding.
